CHICAGO -- The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association has named maestro Riccardo Muti as the next music director of the CSO. He's the tenth conductor to hold that post.

CSO president Deborah Card announced early Monday that Muti (MOO'-tee) has signed a five-year contract to serve as music director beginning in the 2010-2011 season. The post has been vacant since Daniel Barenboim (BAYR'-en-boym) resigned in 2006.

The 66-year-old Muti first led the CSO as a guest conductor in 1973. Rumors that he was being considered for the top post began circulating after he led the orchestra in a triumphant European tour in 2007.
